ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Audio Engineering

Audio engineering is about making sounds that we hear in music, movies or any other media, sound great. Imagine you are playing with your toys, and one of them is making a sound that you love. Now, if you want that sound to be louder or clearer or come only from one side of your room, that's where audio engineering kicks in.

An audio engineer takes the sounds that musicians, actors, or other sources produce and puts them together to make a final product that sounds perfect. They use different tools to record, mix and edit those sounds.

When musicians or actors record a song or dialogue, they use microphones to capture their voice or instruments. An audio engineer makes sure the microphone is placed in the right position, so that the sound coming out of it is captured accurately. They also use different types of microphones for different instruments, as each one has a unique sound.

After recording, engineers use software to 'mix' the different sounds together. This is where they adjust the volume, frequency, and other characteristics of each sound, to make them fit perfectly with other sounds. They also experiment with different effects like reverb, echo, or compression, to enhance or suppress specific elements.

Finally, engineers prepare the audio product for distribution, such as CDs or digital streaming platforms. They ensure that the audio sounds good on different devices, such as headphones or speakers.

In simple terms, audio engineering is like cooking. Musicians and actors provide ingredients, and audio engineers use their tools, techniques, and skills to create a delicious final dish that everyone loves to listen to.
