ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Autonomy of syntax

Autonomy of syntax means that words can go together and make sense even if the meaning is not clear. Sometimes, words can be used in different ways to create different meanings. For example, the sentence "I saw her duck" could mean "I saw the bird called a duck that she owns" or "I saw her crouch down." Even though these meanings are different, the sentence is grammatically correct in both cases. This makes language very flexible and allows people to express themselves in different ways.
