ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Auxiliaries

Auxiliaries are helper words that help us make sentences in English. They are like friends that help you get things done, like helping you clean your room or cook dinner.

For example, let's say we want to create a sentence about an action that happened in the past. We can say "I played with my toys". But what if we want to say "I did not play with my toys"? Or what if we want to ask "Did you play with your toys?"

This is where auxiliaries come in! They help us make negative and interrogative sentences. In this case, the auxiliary is "did". To make the negative sentence, we add "not" after "did", so it becomes "I did not play with my toys". To make the question, we swap the position of the subject and auxiliary, so it becomes "Did you play with your toys?"

There are many different auxiliaries in English, each with its own special job. For example, "can" is an auxiliary that helps us talk about ability. We can say "I can swim" to show that we are able to swim. And "will" is an auxiliary that helps us talk about the future. We can say "I will go shopping tomorrow" to talk about what we plan to do.

Overall, auxiliaries are really handy helper words that make it easier for us to talk and write in English. So next time you need a little help with your sentences, just remember to call upon your trusty auxiliaries!
