Auxiliaries (Roman military)

Auxiliaries were like the sidekicks to the main superheroes - the Roman army. They were soldiers who helped the Roman army do their job better. They came from places that were conquered by the Romans and they promised to help the Romans fight in exchange for some things they needed.

The auxiliaries were really good at certain things that the Roman soldiers weren't so good at. For example, they were really good at horse riding and throwing spears. The Romans weren't as good at those things, so the auxiliaries helped them out.

There were different types of auxiliaries. Some of them were foot soldiers and some were on horses. So when the Roman army went to battle, they had all kinds of soldiers with them to help them fight.

The auxiliaries didn't get as much respect as the Roman soldiers, but they were really important in helping the army be successful.
