Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps

The Aviation Section of the U.S. Signal Corps was a group of special people who were responsible for flying airplanes to help the military. They had to learn how to operate these fancy metal birds and navigate through the sky, just like a car on a road.

The section was first created way back in 1907 when the U.S. Army needed help figuring out how to use new technology, such as telegraphs and radios, for communicating during a war. They found out that airplanes could also be useful for scouting enemies and flying over them to drop bombs or take pictures.

These special pilots, called aviators, worked very hard to train before going into battle, just like going to school to learn how to read and write. They learned how to fly, read maps and navigate the skies, communicate with other pilots on the ground, and work as a team to complete missions.

The Aviation Section later became the United States Army Air Service, which eventually became the United States Air Force. And today, pilots and aviators still play a big role in protecting our country and keeping us safe.
