Awamori is a special type of alcohol that comes from the Okinawa islands in Japan. It's really important to the people who live there, and has been around for a very long, long time (like, longer than your grandparents' grandparents' grandparents!).
To make awamori, people take a special kind of rice called Thai rice (you might have heard of it - it's the same kind of rice they use to make sushi!). Then they mix it with something called koji, which are little tiny mushrooms that make magic happen to the rice. The koji makes the rice change and become something totally different!
After that, they mix it with water and something called yeasts. The yeasts also help to make magic happen in the mixture, and eventually it turns into this special kind of alcohol called awamori!
The best way to try awamori is to drink it like how the people in Okinawa do - they like to mix it with water, and then add some ice to make it really cold. Then they drink it in a special kind of glass called a chatakku, which is short and squat and helps to make the awamori taste even better!
