ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

BREACH

A breach is like breaking a promise or a rule.

For example, let’s say you promise to keep a secret for your friend. If you tell someone else the secret, then you have breached your promise.

Now, in the grown-up world, sometimes big companies make promises to keep important information safe, like your personal information (like your name, address, and email) that they collect from you. They have rules to protect that information so no one can see it or use it without your permission.

But if someone is sneaky and hacks into the company’s computer system and steals your personal information, they have breached the company's rules. This is a very bad thing because the information can be used to do bad things like steal your money or pretend to be you.

So, just like if you break a promise, there are consequences for companies who breach their rules and let your personal information get stolen. They have to tell you what happened and how it is being fixed. They also have to work hard to make sure it doesn't happen again in the future.
