ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Backbencher

A backbencher is someone who sits at the back row of seats in a group or organization, like a classroom or a government.

In a government, the backbenchers are the Members of Parliament (MPs) who are not in the Cabinet or the Shadow Cabinet. Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet members are like the teachers or the leaders, they make important decisions and have important responsibilities.

The backbenchers are like the rest of the students in a class. They still have jobs to do—they represent their constituents, they vote, they attend meetings—but they don't have as much power as the Cabinet or Shadow Cabinet members.

Sometimes, backbenchers can be a bit like the kids who sit at the back of the class and don't pay much attention. They might not always agree with what the Cabinet or Shadow Cabinet members are saying, and they might even cause trouble or try to challenge them.

But, just like how every student in a class is important, backbenchers are important too. They represent their constituents and can speak up for them in Parliament. And who knows, one day they might even become a Cabinet or Shadow Cabinet member themselves!
