Backdoor progression

Okay kiddo, let me explain backdoor progression.

You know how sometimes when you go to your room, you forget to turn off the light and your mom tells you to go back and turn it off? Well, when we talk about backdoor progression, we mean going back a different way to get to the same place.

In music, we use chords (which are like a group of notes played together) to create a certain sound or feeling. Sometimes, instead of going from one chord to another in the usual way, we can go a different way and it's called a backdoor progression.

For example, let's say we have a chord progression that goes from the first chord to the fourth chord to the fifth chord. To make it a backdoor progression, we would go from the first chord to a different chord called the "flat seventh" and then to the fourth chord and so on.

This backdoor progression creates a different feeling or mood in the music and is often used in jazz and blues music. It's like going through a secret back door to get to the same place and it can make the journey more exciting and unexpected.
