ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Backseat driver

Imagine you are riding in a car with your grown-up friend or family member. They are driving the car and you are sitting in the backseat. A backseat driver is when you keep telling the driver what to do even though you are not driving the car.

For example, if you keep saying things like "Watch out for that car!" or "You should have turned left instead of right!" to the driver, then you are acting like a backseat driver.

Just like how your grown-up friend or family member wants to drive the car their way, they also want to make their own decisions about where to go and how to get there. It can be annoying for them to have someone in the back telling them what to do all the time. It's important to let the driver focus on driving safely and trust that they know where they are going.
