ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Backstay

Okay kiddo, so imagine you're a big boat in the ocean. When you're sailing, the wind is blowing really hard and pushing against your sails. This can make your boat tip over and not go where you want it to.

Now, a backstay is like a rope that runs from the top of the mast on your boat to the back of the boat. It helps keep the mast straight and sturdy when the wind is blowing. Just like how you hold onto something when it's windy so you don't get blown away, the backstay helps keep the boat in control and not tip over in strong winds.

So when you're sailing, the backstay helps keep your boat safe and stable so you can go where you want to go and have fun out on the water.
