ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bagaudae

Okay, so imagine you and your friends live in a village, and you all work together to grow crops and take care of animals. But one day, some big, mean people come and take over your village. They start making you and your friends work even harder, and they take all the food you grow for themselves.

This is kind of like what happened with the bagaudae. They were groups of people who lived in Roman Empire times, and they were sometimes farmers or other regular workers who were really unhappy with the way things were going. They felt like the rich and powerful people, called the aristocrats, were taking advantage of them and treating them unfairly.

So the bagaudae got together and decided to rebel against the aristocrats. They might have hidden out in the countryside or in forests, and they would attack the aristocrats or their property. They didn't really have a leader or a specific plan, but they just wanted to stand up for themselves and try to make things better.

Sometimes the bagaudae were successful in fighting against the aristocrats, but other times they were defeated or things didn't change much. Eventually, the Roman Empire fell apart for other reasons, and the bagaudae disappeared too. But their story is a reminder that people have always wanted to be treated fairly and will try to fight for what they believe in.
