ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Banana equivalent dose

Okay kiddo, have you heard of radioactivity? It's when tiny particles called "atoms" give off energy in the form of waves or particles. Some things in our world have a lot of radioactivity, like bananas!

But don't worry, bananas are still safe to eat. The amount of radioactivity in a banana is so small that it's measured in something called a "banana equivalent dose". That just means scientists use the radioactivity in bananas as a way to compare how much radioactivity is in other things.

So, if something has the same amount of radioactivity as a banana, we can say it has "one banana equivalent dose". It's kind of like measuring something with a ruler, but instead we're measuring it with bananas!

Remember, bananas are still yummy and healthy for you, and the little bit of radioactivity they have won't cause any harm.
