ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Band brake

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a bicycle wheel that spins around really fast. Now, imagine you have a special kind of brake that doesn't squeeze the wheel like the brakes on your bike do. Instead, this brake has a strap or band that wraps around the rim of the wheel like a belt.

When you want to stop the wheel, you pull on a lever or pedal that tightens the band around the wheel, kind of like tightening a belt around your waist. This slows down the wheel and eventually stops it from spinning altogether.

Band brakes are often used on big machines and vehicles like trains or cranes because they can handle a lot of weight and pressure. They're also common on older types of vehicles like motorcycles and some older cars.

So, that's what a band brake is, it's a special kind of brake that uses a strap or band to slow down and stop a spinning wheel. Pretty neat, huh?
