Banknotes of the New Zealand dollar

Banknotes are special pieces of paper that we use to buy things. The New Zealand dollar is the money we use in New Zealand, and it has its own special banknotes.

The banknotes in New Zealand have different colors and pictures on them. There is a $5 note, which is pink, and has a picture of New Zealand's native bird, the Harrier Hawk on it. The $10 note is blue and has the picture of New Zealand's famous writer, Kate Sheppard. The $20 is orange and has the picture of the Queen's father, King George VI. The $50 is green and has the picture of Sir Āpirana Ngata, a Maori leader and politician. The $100 note is brown and has the picture of New Zealand's famous scientist, Sir Ernest Rutherford.

Each note also has a picture of a native bird or fish in the top corner, which helps us to tell the notes apart from each other. These pictures are the Silver Fern leaf for $5, Karearea or Harrier Hawk for $10, Kōkako bird for $20, Hoiho or Yellow-eyed Penguin for $50 and the Whio or the Blue Duck for $100.

When we want to buy something, we give the shopkeeper the money for that item, and we get some banknotes back as change. This is how we use banknotes in New Zealand.
