ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Barometric formula

Imagine you are standing at the bottom of a big, tall mountain. If you take a deep breath, you'll notice that the air feels thicker than usual. That's because there is a lot of air pressing down on you. This is called air pressure.

Now, let's say you start walking up the mountain. As you climb higher, you might notice it gets harder to breathe. That's because there is less air above you pressing down on your lungs.

And this is where the barometric formula comes in. It's a way to calculate how air pressure (the weight of the air) changes as you go up or down in altitude. It does this by taking into account things like temperature, the density of the air, and gravity.

So, as you climb higher up the mountain, the barometric formula can tell you exactly how much the air pressure decreases. And if you were to go deep down in the ocean, the barometric formula could also tell you how much the air pressure increases.

Overall, the barometric formula is really just a way for scientists to understand how air pressure changes as you move around in different environments.
