ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Basic Input/Output System

Hi there! You know how you need to eat breakfast before starting your day? Well, a computer needs something called a basic input/output system (BIOS) before it can start doing things too.

The BIOS is like a small brain inside the computer that helps it understand what parts it has and how they can work together. Think of it like the computer's breakfast!

When you turn on the computer, the BIOS wakes up and checks all the important parts like the hard drive, memory, and keyboard to make sure everything is working properly. If everything is okay, the BIOS tells the computer to start up and show you things on the screen.

Sometimes you need to change something about the computer, like adding more memory or changing the way the keyboard works. The BIOS lets you do this by giving you a special menu that you can use to change things.

So, just like you need breakfast to have a good day, the computer needs the BIOS to work properly and do all the things we need it to do.
