Battle of Summit Springs

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there was a big fight called the Battle of Summit Springs. It happened in what is now Colorado.

In this fight, there were two groups of people: the US Army (which is like a big group of soldiers who work for the government) and the Native American people of the Cheyenne Tribe.

The US Army was led by a man named Colonel (which is like a really important boss) Eugene A. Carr. He and his soldiers were sent to make sure that the Native American people who were living in that area didn't cause any trouble for the people who had recently come to live there too.

The Cheyenne people, on the other hand, were led by a man named Chief Dull Knife. They lived in that area for a very long, long time before the other people came and started taking over their land. They didn't like it because they thought they had a right to live there too, just like their ancestors did.

One day, the US Army found out that the Cheyenne people were hiding near a place called Summit Springs. It's like a big hill that's hard for people to climb. So, the US Army climbed up the hill to fight the Cheyenne people.

The Cheyenne people tried to fight back, but they were outnumbered (which means there were more US Army soldiers than Cheyenne people). They also didn't have as much weapons as the US Army had. So, the fight didn't last very long.

Sadly, many Cheyenne people lost their lives in this fight. Chief Dull Knife was lucky enough to survive but was captured by the US Army. He was told that he and his people had to leave that area and go live somewhere else, which was a very sad thing for them.

So, that's how the Battle of Summit Springs happened. It was a very sad time for both the US Army and the Cheyenne people.
