Beevers–Lipson strip

A "beevers–lipson strip" is a piece of metal inserted into the soil that restricts the flow of water into pools, lakes and streams. It is used to control flooding and help prevent pollution from entering these areas. It works by stopping excess water from flowing into these places and instead causing it to flow along the strip and away from the area, helping to keep the area safe and clean.
