ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Behavior change (individual)

Think about when your mom tells you to eat your vegetables, but you really want to eat candy instead. Sometimes it's hard to do what we know we should do instead of what we want to do. That's called behavior.

Behavior change is the process of changing how we act or behave. It can be hard to change our behavior, but it's important if we want to be healthy and happy.

First, we need to understand why we behave the way we do. This means thinking about what we are doing, and why we are doing it. For example, if we know that eating candy is not good for us and that vegetables are healthier, we can understand the reasons we should eat vegetables instead of candy.

Next, we need to set goals for ourselves. Goals are what we want to achieve or accomplish. If we want to eat more vegetables, we might set a goal to eat one vegetable with every meal.

We also need to have a plan for how we will change our behavior. This means writing down what we will do to help us reach our goals. For example, if we want to eat more vegetables, our plan might be to go shopping for vegetables and learn how to cook them.

Finally, we need to practice our new behavior until it becomes a habit. Habits are things we do without thinking about them, like brushing our teeth every morning. When we make healthy behavior changes, we want them to become habits that we do without even thinking about it.

Changing our behavior can be tough, but it's worth it. When we make healthy choices, we feel better and can enjoy life more.
