ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bench trial

Okay kiddo, so a bench trial is like a pretend trial with only one person deciding what happens instead of a whole group of people. It's like when you play a game and your friend gets to be the referee and decides if you score a point or not.

In a bench trial, the person who decides what happens is called a judge. They listen to all the facts and arguments from both sides and then make a decision based on what they think is fair and right.

It's different from a regular trial where a whole big group of people, called a jury, decide what happens. In a bench trial, it's just the judge making the call.

Some people like bench trials because they think judges are smarter and can make better decisions. Other people like normal trials with juries because it's more fair to have a group of people deciding.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
