ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bergen, New Netherland

Bergen is the name of a city in the state of New Jersey, which is a part of the United States of America. A long, long time ago, before the United States even existed, the area where Bergen is located was first discovered by Europeans from the Netherlands. They called the area New Netherland because they came from a country called the Netherlands.

Back then, Bergen was just a small village with a handful of houses and a few people living there. But over time, more people came from Europe to live in New Netherland, and Bergen grew bigger and bigger.

Eventually, though, the English wanted to take control of New Netherland because they thought it was important for their trade and business. After a while, they succeeded in taking over the land, and New Netherland became part of the British Empire.

But even though Bergen is now a part of the United States, it still has a lot of history and culture from its days as a part of New Netherland. And who knows, maybe one day you can visit the city of Bergen and see all of the cool things that make it special!
