ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bhāts

Bhāts are people who belong to a traditional community in Indian society. They are mostly found in North India and are known for their skills in storytelling, singing and performing poetry.

Like how you have your own talents and skills, Bhāts have their skills as well - which is to preserve the history and cultural traditions of their community. They do this by passing down stories and legends from generation to generation.

In the olden days, when people did not have smartphones or computers, the Bhāts were the ones who would tell stories and convey messages to people. They were like the newsreaders of their times.

Apart from storytelling, they were also well-versed in singing and performing poetry. They would usually perform at weddings, family functions and other important occasions. Their performances were often humorous and entertaining.

Today, their role has evolved with changing times. They are not as prominent as they were in the past, but they still hold an important place in Indian culture. Some Bhāts have shifted to other professions and some are still preserving their community's traditions by practicing their skills whenever they can.
