ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bibcode

Bibcodes are a way of simplifying the way we identify academic papers. It's like a shorthand way of saying, "This is the academic paper I'm talking about!" Bibcodes are made of four parts which help us quickly learn more about the paper. The first part is the year the paper was published. The second part is followed by the first three letters of the journal the paper was published in. The third part gives two characters to tell us what section the paper was published in. The last part is a five-digit number that is unique for the paper. By combining all this information, bibcodes act like a special code that helps us quickly identify academic papers and find out more about them.
