ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Binakol

Binakol is a traditional weaving technique used in the Philippines to create beautiful and colorful fabrics. It involves weaving two or more warp threads together at a time, producing a unique diamond pattern that looks like a checkered grid.

Think of it like playing a game of tic-tac-toe with strings. The horizontal threads are called the weft threads, while the vertical threads are called the warp threads. The weaver ties the warp threads together in groups of two or three so that they alternate in color, creating the diamond pattern.

The weaver then inserts the weft threads over and under the warped threads, following the pattern of the tied groups. This produces the distinctive checkered grid pattern found in binakol.

Binakol can be used to make different types of clothing and fabrics such as blankets, table runners, and scarves. The technique has been practiced in the Philippines for many years and is still used today by skilled weavers to create beautiful and unique textiles.
