ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Biodiesel by region

Okay, so you know how cars and trucks use something called fuel to make them go? Most of the time, this fuel is made from something called petroleum, which is a type of oil that comes from deep underground.

But there's another kind of fuel that people can use, called biodiesel. Biodiesel is made from plants, like soybeans or corn, or even from used cooking oil from restaurants.

Now, different parts of the world have different types of plants that they can use to make biodiesel. For example, in the United States, a lot of biodiesel is made from soybeans, because there are a lot of soybean plants grown there. In Europe, they often use something called rapeseed, which is a type of plant that is similar to canola.

In other parts of the world, like Brazil, they make biodiesel from something called sugarcane. And in Southeast Asia, they use palm oil to make biodiesel.

So you see, depending on where you live, the biodiesel that is available to you might come from a different kind of plant! But no matter what, using biodiesel is good for the environment, because it doesn't burn fossil fuels like petroleum does, and it can be made from renewable resources that we can grow again and again.
