Okay kiddo, so when things made of metal get wet, they can start to rust and break down. But sometimes, this rusting process can be sped up by tiny living things called bacteria. These bacteria eat things in the water and in the metal and create a gas called hydrogen sulfide. This gas can easily dissolve in water and make it really stinky (like rotten eggs!) and can also cause the metal to rust even faster. This is called biogenic sulfide corrosion, which means the rusting is caused by these little bacteria making hydrogen sulfide gas. It's important to prevent this from happening because it can damage things like pipes and machinery, and cost a lot of money to fix. So we need to keep an eye out for signs of corrosion and take steps to stop those pesky bacteria from causing more damage!
