ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Biological oxygen demand

Biological Oxygen Demand, or BOD, is kind of like a test for how dirty water is. It's a way for people to find out how much stuff is living in the water that needs oxygen to survive.

You know how when we breathe in air, our bodies take the oxygen from the air to help our cells work? Well, fish and other things that live in water need oxygen too! And just like when we breathe out, when living things in water "breathe" they release waste products that can create even more problems for the water.

The BOD test works by taking samples of water and keeping them in a container for a few days. During this time, bacteria that eats the waste products in the water will grow and multiply. But the catch is, these bacteria also need oxygen to survive!

So, if there's a lot of waste products in the water, the bacteria will use up a lot of oxygen to eat them all. This means that the BOD will show a high number because there isn't enough oxygen left in the water for other living things to survive.

On the other hand, if there aren't many waste products in the water, the bacteria won't need as much oxygen to eat them all up. This means that the BOD will show a low number because there's still enough oxygen left for all living things to survive.

Overall, the lower the BOD, the cleaner the water is! It's an important test for people who work with water to help make sure that there's enough oxygen for everything living in it to stay healthy.
