Bothy ballad

A bothy ballad is like a song that people would sing when they were working on a farm in Scotland a long time ago. It's a special kind of song that tells a story about the people who work on the farm and the things they do. The name "bothy" comes from the special house where the workers would live together, called a "bothy".

When they were singing these songs, the people would play instruments like the fiddle or the accordion. They would sing in a special way that is called "a cappella", which means without any music. Sometimes, they would even dance while they were singing!

These songs were important because they helped the people on the farm feel connected to each other and to their traditions. They would sing about things like their love lives or their work in the fields. Even though we don't hear bothy ballads as often anymore, they are still an important part of Scottish culture and history.
