Box counting

Box counting is a method of measuring how complex a shape is. To do box counting, we draw a square box (or cube if it's three-dimensional) around the shape. Then, we make the box smaller, and count how many smaller boxes it takes to cover the shape. The more small boxes it takes to cover the shape, the more complex the shape is.
