ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Bracket (mathematics)

Imagine you have a bucket full of toys, and you want to group some toys in a special way. To do this, you can use brackets.

A bracket is a symbol that looks like this [ ]. It's used in mathematics to group numbers, variables, or expressions together.

Let's say you have two toy cars and three toy animals. You want to group them together using brackets to keep them separate from the other toys. Here's how you can do it:

[2 toy cars] [3 toy animals]

This means you have two toy cars in one group and three toy animals in another group.

In math, you can use brackets to make calculations or equations clearer. For example, let's say you have the equation:

4 + 5 x 3

Without brackets, you might get confused about whether to add or multiply first. But if you add brackets like this:

4 + (5 x 3)

Then you know you need to multiply 5 by 3 first and then add 4.

So, brackets are a helpful tool in math to group things together and make equations clearer.
