ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Brain-reading

Brain-reading is a way for scientists to figure out what someone is thinking by looking directly into their brain. Scientists do this by using a machine called an fMRI scanner. The fMRI scanner takes pictures of the brain while a person is thinking or doing an activity and looks for patterns that might be related to what the person is thinking. For example, if someone is thinking about numbers, the fMRI scanner might show the same parts of the brain lighting up when the person thinks about those numbers. By studying these patterns, scientists can learn more about how the brain works and what it does when someone is thinking.
