Brake (railway)

A brake is an important part of a railway. It is a device that helps slow down the train. The train uses a lot of energy when it moves, and braking helps it slow down, so that it doesn't go too fast or crash. To use the brake, the train driver pulls down on a lever. This lever is connected to a type of shoe that rubs on the wheels of the train to slow it down. When the brakes are applied, the train car has to generate friction to slow it down, which causes the wheels to be very noisy and create a lot of heat.
