A moat is a deep, wide ditch that surrounds a castle, fort, or town. Moats were usually filled with water and made it difficult for enemies to get close to the walls of the castle or fort. People living in the castle or fort were safe from attack because the water made it difficult for attackers to cross. Moats also prevented animals from getting close to the walls which could make them more vulnerable to attack.
