Bretèche

Okay kiddo, a bretèche is a fancy word for a small roof that sticks out from the top of a wall. It looks like a little house on top of a bigger house!

The bretèche was first used in medieval times to defend castles and fortresses. The small roof could protect the defenders from arrows and rocks thrown by attackers.

Later on, bretèches became more decorative and were used to show off how fancy a building was. Sometimes they were even used to hang banners or flags.

So think of a bretèche like a little hat for a building, it can be for protection or just to look fancy!
