ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

British rule in Portuguese India

Ok kiddo, let me explain it to you like you're five.

Before we start, I want you to know that India used to be ruled by different countries and people before it became independent. One of those countries was Portugal, which ruled a small part of India in the 1500s.

So, let's talk about British rule in Portuguese India. First, we need to understand what "British rule" means. It means that the British government and people had control over the land, people, and resources of India. They were the boss, and people in India had to do what they said.

Now, when the British rule started in India, the Portuguese were already ruling a small part of India called Goa. The British did not want to take over Goa because it was far away from the places they really wanted to control in India.

But as time went by, the British became more powerful in India and they started to compete with the Portuguese. They wanted to control more of India, and that's when they decided to take over Goa too.

In 1961, the Indian army helped the British take over Goa from the Portuguese. That means that the Portuguese were not in charge of Goa anymore, and the British now had even more power in India.

So, to sum it up, British rule in Portuguese India means that the British government and people took control of an area that was previously ruled by the Portuguese. They did this because they wanted to control more of India and had become more powerful.
