ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Brown-dwarf desert

Okay kiddo, imagine you are looking at a starry sky at night. There are millions of stars up there, right? Now imagine some of those stars are not like the others. They are called brown dwarfs and they are not big enough to be a star but they are also not small enough to be a planet. They are in-between!

Scientists have been exploring the galaxy for a long time to learn about different types of stars and planets. They noticed that there is a part of space where there are not a lot of brown dwarfs. This area is called the "brown-dwarf desert."

The reason scientists call it a desert is because it's like a sandy desert where there are not a lot of things living there. In the brown-dwarf desert, there are not a lot of brown dwarfs.

This is interesting to scientists because they want to understand why there aren't many brown dwarfs in this particular part of space. They think it could have something to do with how stars form and how planets develop.

So, while there are many stars and planets out there, the brown-dwarf desert is a special area where there aren't many brown dwarfs to be found.
