ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Building (mathematics)

Building in mathematics is like putting together a puzzle. When you start building, you have lots of pieces that you can use, called numbers. You can add them up or take them away to create new numbers.

For example, if you have three pieces and you add two more, you will have five pieces altogether. If you take away one piece from the five, you will be left with four pieces.

Building can also involve grouping pieces together. For instance, you can group two sets of three pieces together to get six pieces.

In building, it is important to follow the rules, just like when you do a puzzle. The rules in mathematics are called operations, and there are four basic ones: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

So, when you build with mathematics, you use numbers and the operations to create new numbers, sometimes by adding or taking away pieces, sometimes by grouping them together. And just like building a puzzle, the goal is to create something that makes sense and fits together.
