Bulgarian schism

Ok kiddo, imagine you have two friends who are very close but suddenly they have a big fight and stop talking to each other. That's what happened in Bulgaria in the year 1054, but instead of friends, it was two groups of Christians. One group was living in the east and the other in the west of the country.

The reason they fought was about how they wanted to worship God. The eastern group, led by the Patriarch of Constantinople, wanted to make some changes to their religious practices, such as how they would pray or the type of bread they would use during communion. But the western group, led by the Bishop of Rome, didn't like those changes and wanted to stick to their traditional way of worshiping.

The disagreement grew bigger and bigger until it became a big problem. In fact, it was such a problem that it caused what's called a "schism", which is just a fancy word for a split or a separation. So, in 1054, the western group decided to separate from the eastern group and form their own church, which is now known as the Roman Catholic Church.

Meanwhile, the eastern group continued to follow the Patriarch of Constantinople and created what is now known as the Eastern Orthodox Church. And that, my dear little one, is how the Bulgarian schism happened.
