ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

CAD data exchange

Okay kiddo, let me explain what CAD data exchange means in a very simple way. You know how you like to play with your Lego blocks and build different things, right? Sometimes you might get new Lego pieces from your friend and you want to build something using those pieces. Similarly in the world of designing, people create different 3D models using special computer programs called Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. These models are created in different formats like .STL, .DWG, .STEP, .IGES etc.

Now, let's imagine that your friend uses a different kind of Lego blocks that you don't have at home. So, you will need to exchange some of your Lego blocks with your friend to be able to build something using those new blocks. Similarly, when people work on designing different products or parts, they often need to exchange these 3D models in different formats so that others can open and work on them. This is called CAD data exchange.

Basically, CAD data exchange means transferring or sharing 3D models in different formats between different people or software programs. Just like you exchanging Lego blocks with your friend, CAD data exchange allows designers to share their designs with others or use someone else's design in their own work. This helps different people who are working on the same project to collaborate, exchange ideas and work on the same design using different CAD software.
