California Indian Reservations and Cessions

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago, before California became a state, there were Native American tribes living all over the land. These tribes had their own cultures, languages, and customs. They lived off the land and had their own ways of making food, clothing, and shelter.

But then, some people from other countries (like Spain and the United States) started coming to California and the Native Americans had to start sharing their land. As more and more people came, they started taking the Native Americans' land away and pushing them to live in smaller and smaller areas. These smaller areas are called "reservations."

The California Indian Reservations were pieces of land that were set aside by the government for specific Native American tribes to live on. They were meant to be a sort of "compensation" for the land that had been taken from them. But not all tribes were given reservations and some of the reservations were really small and not very good for farming or hunting.

One way that the government got more land for other people was by asking or even forcing the Native American tribes to give up more of their land. This is called a "cession." A cession is when one group of people gives land to another group of people. In this case, the Native American tribes were giving land to the government or to settlers who wanted to live on their land.

As you can imagine, the California Indian Reservations and cessions were a source of a lot of conflict and sadness for the Native American tribes. Many of them lost their traditional ways of life and had to adapt to living on a tiny piece of land that was very different from what they were used to. But they also showed incredible resilience and strength in fighting to keep their cultures and traditions alive, even in the face of great challenges.
