ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

California Proposition 83 (2006)

Okay kiddo, in 2006 the grown-ups in California introduced something called Proposition 83. It was also called the Jessica's Law. They did it to help protect children from bad people who might want to hurt them.

So, let me tell you what this law does. If a person is found guilty of certain crimes against children, like sexual assault or kidnapping, they will have to be put in jail for a longer time than before. This is to make sure they can't do it again and hurt more children.

Also, this law says that when these bad people get out of jail, they can't live too close to places where children usually go, like schools, parks or playgrounds. This is to keep them away from kids and make it harder for them to hurt them again.

Now, it's important to remember that this law only applies to certain crimes and it doesn't mean that all people who go to jail for these crimes will never do it again or that they are all bad people. But, it's a way for the grown-ups to try to keep kids safe and make sure bad people face tougher consequences if they do hurt them.
