ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Callback (comedy)

Imagine that you're going to a birthday party for your friend. The party is super fun and you can't stop laughing, especially when your friend's dad tells a really funny joke.

After the party, you go home and tell your mom about the joke. She thinks it's hilarious, so you decide to tell it at school the next day.

The next day at school, you tell your friends the joke, but they don't think it's that funny. You start feeling embarrassed and wish you had never told the joke in the first place.

But then, something amazing happens. Later that day, you're in class and your teacher says something that reminds you of the joke. You remember that the joke has a really funny part that you didn't emphasize before, so you decide to tell it again, but this time you add the funny part.

To your surprise, your friends start laughing out loud! They think the joke is hilarious now that you added the extra funny part.

This is called a callback in comedy. It's when a comedian tells a joke or story and then references it later in their act. They might add more details or a funny twist to it, which makes the audience laugh even harder because they already know what's coming.

So, just like how you added a funny part to the joke when you told it again in class, comedians use callbacks to make their jokes even funnier. It's a clever way to connect with the audience and keep them engaged throughout their act.
