Okay kiddo, have you ever been to a beach or seen pictures of a beach? You know how the water from the ocean or lake goes up to the sand and then goes back down again? That area where the water meets the sand is called the shoreline.
Now, a long time ago, there was a place called Lake Chicago which was a big lake that covered parts of Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan - even Chicago was underwater! When the lake started to shrink, it left behind a special type of shoreline called the calumet shoreline.
The calumet shoreline is different from other shorelines because it has big cliffs made of sand and rocks that can be many stories high! These cliffs were formed because the lake levels kept going up and down over thousands of years, and the waves would slowly wear away at the sand and rocks, making these big cliffs that we can still see today.
So, next time you go to a beach or see a shoreline, remember that the calumet shoreline is a special kind of shoreline with big cliffs and a special history!
