Campylobacter

Campylobacter is a type of germ, or microbe, that can make people sick. These germs are really, really tiny – so small you can't see them without a microscope.

The germs live in the guts (that's your tummy!) of different animals, like cows, chickens, and sometimes even dogs! When people eat or touch things that have the germ on them, the germ can get into their bodies and make them sick.

Some of the signs that someone has a campylobacter infection include tummy cramps, diarrhea, fever, and feeling really tired. Just like when you have a cold, it's important to stay away from other people when you're feeling sick so you don't spread the germs to anyone else.

To keep from getting sick from campylobacter, it's important to always cook your food really well – especially meat like chicken and beef. Washing your hands with soap after you use the bathroom or pet animals is also really important. And if you do get a campylobacter infection, don't worry – most people get better on their own with rest and plenty of fluids (that's water and other drinks that keep you hydrated!).
