ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

Okay kiddo, so imagine you have a really big and important toy that everyone wants to play with. In Canada, that toy is the radio, television, and telecommunications (which means internet and phone) systems.

Now, because this toy is so important, we need some grown-ups to make sure everyone plays nicely and fairly with it. That's where the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) comes in!

The CRTC makes sure that companies that own parts of this toy (like TV stations, radio stations, and internet providers) are treating everyone fairly. They make rules about things like how much different companies can charge for their services so that everyone has a chance to use the toy.

The CRTC also makes sure that there is a lot of different kinds of things to watch and listen to on the toy. They make sure that there are TV shows and radio stations for people who speak different languages and for people who live in different parts of Canada.

So, basically, the CRTC is like a big grown-up who is making sure that everyone can use the radio, television, and internet systems in Canada in a fair and equal way!
