Canoe paddle strokes

Okay kiddo, let's talk about how to use a paddle to move a canoe through the water.

First, you hold the paddle with two hands, one hand on the top and one hand in the middle. The top hand is like your steering wheel and the bottom hand is like your gas pedal.

To go forward, you dip the paddle into the water in front of you and pull it towards you with the bottom hand while pushing it away with the top hand. This creates a "J" shape in the water and pushes the canoe forward.

To turn the canoe, you can use a "sweep" stroke. Reach out to the side of the canoe with your top hand and put the paddle in the water at an angle. Then, pull the paddle towards you while pushing it away with the top hand. This creates a wide arc in the water and turns the canoe in that direction.

If you need to turn quickly, you can use a "draw" stroke. Reach out to the side of the canoe with your bottom hand and put the paddle in the water perpendicular to the canoe. Then, pull the paddle towards you while keeping it close to the canoe. This creates a small arc in the water that turns the canoe quickly.

Finally, if you want to stop the canoe or slow down, you can use a "brake" stroke. Simply dip the paddle into the water behind you and push it towards the back of the canoe. This creates resistance and stops the canoe from moving.

Remember to use both sides of the paddle equally to keep the canoe moving straight. And always wear a life jacket when you're in the canoe!
