Caprolactam

Caprolactam is a big fancy word that describes a kind of fluffy powder that is used to make something called nylon. Nylon is a stretchy material that can be used to make all kinds of things like clothes, backpacks and even toothbrush bristles!

To make caprolactam, scientists start with a big old molecule called cyclohexane. They mix it with a special gas and it turns into another molecule called adipic acid. Then they mix the adipic acid with some more special ingredients and it turns into caprolactam.

Caprolactam is really important for making nylon because it helps the nylon threads stick together when they are being made. Without caprolactam, the nylon wouldn't work right and all those things we talked about (like clothes and backpacks) wouldn't be stretchy and strong like they are supposed to be.

So, in short, caprolactam is a special powder that helps make nylon, which is a really stretchy and strong material used to make all sorts of things!
