Carbon budget

A carbon budget is like a budget someone might make in order to save money. We know that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a type of pollution that comes from using energy from burning coal, oil, and natural gas. The Earth only has so much room for the CO2 and other pollution to stay in the air. If we put too much into the atmosphere, things like temperatures, sea levels, and weather can start to change if too much stays in the air for too long.
A carbon budget helps us understand how much CO2 we can put into the atmosphere and still have a healthy planet. It is like a budget that lets us know how much energy we can use, like turning on the lights, running the air conditioning, and driving a car. It helps us know how much CO2 and pollution we can produce before it hurts the Earth. By getting help from scientists, governments can create a budget that limits how much CO2 people use and keeps the climate healthy.
