ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Carbon negative

Carbon negative means that something is actively removing more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces.

So, when we breathe and burn things, carbon is released into the air. This is not great because too much carbon in the air can cause problems like climate change.

But, some things can help take carbon out of the air. Trees, for example, take in carbon through their leaves and store it in their trunks and roots.

Now, imagine if we did more things like planting trees, which take in more carbon than they release. This would be carbon negative, because we are removing more carbon from the air than we are putting into it.

Other things that can be carbon negative include using renewable energy like wind and solar power, and using farming techniques that store carbon in the soil.

So, being carbon negative is a good thing because it helps reduce the amount of carbon in the air and can help prevent climate change.
